Holiday Fruitcake? Nope- Holiday Fruit!

Happy Holidays! Yes it’s December. Yes it’s that time of year again. And Yes, I still haven’t found a good Fruitcake recipe. Okay, no more talk about fruitcake. Let's get to the good stuff, namely three of my favorite fruits: Satsuma, Asian pears, and Pomegranates! You’ll see them in the grocery store, in local markets, and on restaurants menus. Don’t miss out.

pomegranate Satsuma are the perfect citrusy snack on a cold day, try to peel it in one deft move! Asian pears are delicious, more akin to the texture and flavor of a Golden Delicious Apple than a Bosc or Anjou Pear. Pomegranates are one the Food Giraffe’s absolute-all-time-favorite fruits. Extracting the seeds is so much fun and satisfying, like plucking an annoying sliver in your finger. Put them in a bowl and eat them like popcorn. They taste exquisite and they burst in your mouth like little juicy water balloons- sweet, tasty, tangy, water balloons.

If you are intimidated with dissecting a pomegranate, I assure it’s easy and not much can go wrong. Simply slice of the a bit of the top, look for the white pithy lines that section the seeds, make a shallow cut until you can grab with your fingers, and tear the rest apart. Jostle the seeds free with your fingers and enjoy!

(About the only thing that can go wrong is some pomegranate juice splattering. I made the mistake of wearing a new white shirt only to find some lovely red spots when I looked in the mirror. Fortunately a little “Wine Away” and a wash took care of it.)
